24 May: Opening of the Kraków celebrations of the World Copernican Congress

The World Copernican Congress is organised to mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of the great astronomer. An official opening of the Congress will be held on 24 May at 10:00 a.m. in JU Auditorium Maximum, ul. Krupnicza 33, starting with a lecture by Rev. Prof. Michał Heller entitled Nicolaus Copernicus' Theory of Relativity. Following that, there will be two plenary sessions: Empirical Turn in Economics, A Copernican Turn or a Return of the Pendulum? and The (Copernican) Revolution in Economics.

The philosophical part of the Congress, entitled ‘The Copernican Heritage’, will be separated into three sections:

  1. Copernicus’ Influence: on the evolution of worldviews: a panel discussing Copernicus’ influence both on scientific and everyday perspectives on the world as well as the dynamics of changes in these perspectives. The panel will feature philosophers, historians, anthropologists, theologians and literary scholars.
  2. Revolutions in Science: a panel devoted to the nature of the Copernican Revolution in science and, more generally, all great scientific revolutions. The panel will be attended by philosophers, science scholars, science historians and psychologists.
  3. The Anthropic Principle: a panel on the anthropic principle, first formulated during the 1973 Copernican Congress. The panel is directed to philosophers, cosmologists and mathematicians.

10.30–11.30 a.m. Opening lecture Nicolaus Copernicus' Theory of Relativity by Rev. Prof. Michał Heller (Pontifical University of John Paul II)

1.00–2.30 p.m. Plenary session: Revolution and crisis in science: lessons from the past and future perspectives

Panel chair: Prof. Wojciech Grygiel (Pontifical University of John Paul II)

The discussion will feature Prof. Helge Kragh (Aarhus University), Prof. Andrzej Jajszczyk (AGH University of Science and Technology), Prof. Lidia Morawska (Queensland University of Technology)

2.45–3.45 p.m. Lecture: The 'Empirical Turn in Economics, A Copernican Turn or a Return of the Pendulum?

Speaker: Prof. Michel de Vroey (Economics School of Louvain)

4.00–5.30 p.m. Plenary session: The (Copernican) Revolution in Economics

Panel chair: Prof. Andrzej Wojtyna (Kraków University of Economics)

The discussion will feature Prof. David de la Croix (Universite catholique de Louvain), Prof. Andreas Irmen (University of Luxembourg) and Prof. Claude Diebolt (Universite du Strasbourg)
