To mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, the Jagiellonian University Museum hosts an exhibition of postcards and stamps related to the great astronomer from the collection of Prof. Aleksander B. Skotnicki.

The exhibition will feature the most important Copernicus-related items kept at the Jagiellonian Library, such as the manuscript of his greatest book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, its first, second and third editions as well as Copernicus’ signature in the book of admissions from his time at the University of Kraków.

Exhibition: Nicolaus Copernicus' Jubilee on the 550th anniversary of his birth

The exhibition was organised by the Polish-Canadian Business and Professional Association of Windsor. It was first conceived by its president, Jerzy Barycki, social activist and documentarian working to promote Poland in Canada and Canada in Poland. Other similar exhibitions that originated with him were displayed various part of Canada as well as the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and the Parliament of Canada.

The World Copernican Congress is organised by Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and the Polish Academy of Science Institute of History. Nicolaus Copernicus, a polymath with an impressively large scope of interests in various branches of science, a distinguished scholar numbering amongst the most important thinkers in the history of the world, was born in 1473 in Toruń, began his studies in 1491 in Kraków, and spend forty years of his life in service to his fellow countrymen in Warmia and Olsztyn. Three Polish higher education representing these regions – the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, together with the Polish Academy of Science Institute of History of Science, celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of the great astronomer by organising the World Copernican Congress.

On 13 March 2023, an exhibition devoted to the life of Nicolaus Copernicus organised by the Polish diaspora in Canada to honour the great astronomer and his impact on the world was opened in the JU Collegium Novum.

Nothing more beautiful than the heavens

Nicolaus Copernicus, famous astronomer, mathematician, physician, lawyer and economist, was born on 19 February 1473. To mark the 550th anniversary of that event, the Senate of the Republic of Poland decided to proclaim 2023 as the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus. The celebrations will be joined by the Polish academic community, in particular the Jagiellonian University, Copernicus’ alma mater.

On 19 February, the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, the World Copernican Congress was officially opened in Toruń at the university bearing the astronomer’s name. The event was co-organised by three other Polish higher education institutions: the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Art History and Jagiellonian University.

24 May: Opening of the Kraków celebrations of the World Copernican Congress

The World Copernican Congress is organised to mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of the great astronomer. An official opening of the Congress will be held on 24 May at 10:00 a.m. in JU Auditorium Maximum, ul. Krupnicza 33, starting with a lecture by Rev. Prof. Michał Heller entitled Nicolaus Copernicus' Theory of Relativity. Following that, there will be two plenary sessions: Empirical Turn in Economics, A Copernican Turn or a Return of the Pendulum? and The (Copernican) Revolution in Economics.
