Kraków institutions sign a letter of intent concerning the World Copernican Congress

Representatives of Kraków academic community as well as regional and local government have signed a letter of intent in JU Collegium Maius Libraria Room, paving the way for the organisation of the World Copernican Congress marking the 550th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus birthday.

Prof. Jacek Popiel (Rector of the Jagiellonian University), Prof. Jerzy Lis (Rector of the AGH University of Science and Technology), Prof. Stanisław Mazur (Rector of the Cracow University of Economics), Jerzy Muzyk (Deputy of the President of Kraków), Witold Kozłowski (Marshal of the Małopolskie Voivodeship) and Dorota Gibas (member of the Voivodeship Executive Board) have signed a document in which they agreed to collaborate on organising the World Copernican Congress. The Jagiellonian University was chosen as the coordinator of the part of the events hosted in Kraków. Other events will also be held in Toruń and Olsztyn with the participation of higher education institutions from those cities.

The World Copernican Congress events hosted in Kraków will be divided into two thematic parts: philosophy and economy. They will be attended not only by eminent philosophers who will discuss issues related to philosophy of science and Copernican Revolution, but also world-class economists who will debate on Copernicus’ thoughts on the value of money and fiscal policies.

The aim of the World Copernican Congress is to expand our knowledge about Copernicus’ research, its impact on different branches of science and historic and cultural transformations caused by his discoveries. It will also provide an opportunity to promote science communication and education.

The Congress will be officially opened on 19 February 2023 in Toruń, on the 550th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus’ birthday. The Kraków part will begin on 24 May and will last for three days.
