On 13 March 2023, an exhibition devoted to the life of Nicolaus Copernicus organised by the Polish diaspora in Canada to honour the great astronomer and his impact on the world was opened in the JU Collegium Novum.

Nothing more beautiful than the heavens

Nicolaus Copernicus, famous astronomer, mathematician, physician, lawyer and economist, was born on 19 February 1473. To mark the 550th anniversary of that event, the Senate of the Republic of Poland decided to proclaim 2023 as the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus. The celebrations will be joined by the Polish academic community, in particular the Jagiellonian University, Copernicus’ alma mater.

Official opening of the World Copernican Congress

On 19 February, the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, the World Copernican Congress was officially opened in Toruń at the university bearing the astronomer’s name. The event was co-organised by three other Polish higher education institutions: the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Art History and Jagiellonian University.

The Kraków part of the celebrations of the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus opened with a lecture by Prof. Aleksander Skotnicki entitled ‘Copernicus in Kraków. From Kraków to Copernicus’, which took place on 26 January 2023 in JU Collegium Maius.

Kraków institutions sign a letter of intent concerning the World Copernican Congress

Representatives of Kraków academic community as well as regional and local government have signed a letter of intent in JU Collegium Maius Libraria Room, paving the way for the organisation of the World Copernican Congress marking the 550th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus birthday.
